History

Historical Context

In late 1967, U.S. Navy warrant officer John Walker sold submarine communications to the Soviet KGB, delivering over one million encrypted messages before his May 20 1985 arrest and life sentence. His ring’s exposure forced the U.S. navy to expand counterintelligence units and revamp cryptography in the late 1980s. Today, Indian sailor Pradeep Mukherjee’s alleged leak to a Pakistani operative prompted a CI arrest at INS Agrani.
