Army Ambulance Carrying Soldier’s Remains Crashes on Purvanchal Expressway, Killing Four

Around 8 a.m. on Sunday, an Army ambulance transporting the remains of Subedar Major Satyawan Singh collided with a stationary truck on the Purvanchal Expressway near the 79.6-km mark in the Haliyapur area, close to the Ayodhya-Sultanpur border in Uttar Pradesh. Police said the ambulance went out of control and rammed the parked vehicle, severely damaging the ambulance.

Victims and Identities

The crash claimed the lives of four people accompanying the soldier’s remains: his son Gaurav Singh, 28; his brother Rajan Chaudhary, 35; his nephew Ram Samujh Singh, 40; and the ambulance driver Jaspal, 30. Gaurav Singh and Jaspal died at the scene, while Rajan Chaudhary and Ram Samujh Singh later succumbed to injuries while receiving treatment at a hospital in Pithla-Kumarganj, Ayodhya district.

Context and Background

Subedar Major Satyawan Singh, a 50-year-old resident of Galiya Dudhailla village in the Rudrapur area of Deoria district, had been undergoing treatment for kidney disease at the Command Hospital in Chandigarh. He was posted in Meerut at the time of his death. The ambulance was en route from Chandigarh to his native village in Deoria district when the accident occurred.

Official Response

Sultanpur Superintendent of Police Vineet Jaiswal, together with District Magistrate Indrajeet Singh, visited the crash site after being alerted to the incident. Police took the bodies into custody for post-mortem examination and informed the families of the deceased. The remains of Subedar Major Satyawan have been kept at the Haliyapur police station pending further arrangements. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed condolences to the bereaved families, directed officials to expedite relief and rescue operations, and ordered that injured persons receive proper medical care.

Aftermath

Relief teams arrived promptly, and investigations continue to determine the precise cause of the ambulance’s loss of control. While the vehicle’s association with the military was reported, officials had not officially confirmed this link at the time of filing. The incident underscores the risks faced by families and personnel involved in transporting the remains of service members.
