History

Historical Context

India’s Parliament passed the Dowry Prohibition Act in 1961, added IPC sections 498A (1983) and 304B (1986), and enacted the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act in 2005, which came into force on 26 October 2006. The NCRB recorded 8,233 dowry deaths in 2012, reflecting persistent violence. The 2026 Meerut arrest of Mayank Singh for alleged dowry harassment demonstrates continued enforcement of these statutes.
