History

Historical Context

In the 2004 general election, the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance shocked predictions by winning a plurality of 219 Lok Sabha seats, ending the BJP’s six-year rule. The victory relied on alliances with regional parties and support from poorer, lower-caste and minority voters. Uttar Pradesh’s new Congress president Aradhana Misra cites that historic resurgence as a model for a 2027 state challenge.
