History

Historical Context

The 1968 Mexico City Olympics Black Power salute, staged on October 16, 1968, sparked worldwide debate over athletes’ political expression. Tommie Smith and John Carlos, representing the United States, raised gloved fists during the 200-meter medal ceremony, prompting an 18-month IOC suspension. Today, the Israel Football Association and the Football Association of Ireland echo that legacy by seeking UEFA approval for black-armband displays to protest perceived racism. The precedent shows governing bodies must balance symbolic dissent with diplomatic sensitivities, influencing future tournament protocols and media scrutiny of athlete activism.
