History

Historical Context

In 1994 the NFL imposed a $34.6 million salary cap, compelling franchises to cut marquee talent to meet financial limits. The New York Giants, under head coach Dan Reeves, released veteran running back Rodney Hampton that year, saving approximately $2.5 million in cap space. Echoing that precedent, the 2026 Giants dismissed wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. after three games, promoting returner Braxton Berrios and signing Charlie Jones. Such roster overhauls underscore how cap pressures and performance expectations continually reshape team composition, prompting ongoing debates over player valuation.
