History

Historical Context

The FA Women’s Super League began in April 2011 with eight clubs, and Arsenal captured the inaugural title. Manchester City earned a top-flight licence in 2014 and, after the league turned fully professional in 2018-19, invested heavily—part of the £123.6 million spent by leading clubs on women’s teams through 2022-23. Their financial edge now pressures Arsenal to overhaul recruitment after the recent defeat.
