History

Historical Context

In 1992, UEFA expelled Yugoslavia from Euro 1992 after United Nations sanctions, forcing its home qualifiers to be played on neutral grounds. Yugoslavia had secured a 3-0 victory over Denmark before the ban, a result that later allowed Denmark to win the tournament. Today, UEFA approved Israel Football Association’s black-armband request marking the Oct. 7, 2023 Hamas attack, moving the match to Serbia amid Irish protests. The recurrence underscores how geopolitical conflicts repeatedly reshape international sport, prompting governing bodies to balance security, symbolism, and diplomatic pressure.
