Expanded Recall of Frozen Berries in the Ohio-Kentucky-Indiana Area

By Drooid · · How we work

Background and Earlier Recalls

Frutas y Hortalizas del Sur S.A., a San Carlos, Chile-based company, first initiated a recall of frozen organic IQF blueberries and berry-blend products on July 2 2026. A second FDA notice on September 3 2026 expanded the recall after traceback linked the frozen blueberries to an outbreak first identified on July 3 2026. The original recall targeted products sold at Publix under the Greenwise brand after an E. coli outbreak in Florida and Georgia.

Scope of Affected Products and Distribution

The latest expansion adds Great Value’s Frozen Organic Blueberries, its Triple Berry Blend, and Trader Joe’s Frozen Mixed Berry Blend. Great Value items were shipped to Walmart stores in 30 states, including Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana, and Puerto Rico, in 10-ounce bags with best-by dates of January 2028 and February 2028. Trader Joe’s blends were sold in 26 states—including Michigan and Washington, D.C.—in 12-ounce bags with a best-by date of February 2028. All products carry a best-by date of June 12 2028 for the blueberries.

Health Impact Data

The outbreak strain is identified as *Escherichia coli* O145:H28, a Shiga toxin-producing E. coli. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Florida Department of Health, 17 people were infected in two states, with 11 of the 13 interviewed cases reporting consumption of frozen blueberries. Six hospitalizations occurred; no deaths were reported. The FDA notes that, to date, no illnesses have been linked to the newly recalled Walmart or Trader Joe’s products.

Official Guidance and Next Steps

The FDA advises consumers to check freezers for the listed items and to return them for a full refund. Retailers in the affected states have been instructed to remove the products from shelves immediately. No further recall expansions have been announced.
