History

Historical Context

Major League Baseball added a wild-card berth in 1994, first used in 1995 after the players’ strike cancelled that postseason. The change created a three-division league and a Division Series, letting the Colorado Rockies win the NL’s inaugural wild-card spot. Expanded again in 2022, six teams per league now compete in best-of-three series, increasing postseason participants to 16 in 2020.
