History

Historical Context

In 1999, Baylor's football program achieved its first 10-win season under head coach Kevin Steele, culminating in a 38-24 victory over Texas. That season, quarterback Josh Blankenship threw for 2,500 yards, while the team outgained opponents by an average of 150 yards per game. Similarly, the 2026 Arizona State loss to Baylor, where DJ Lagway recorded four touchdowns and the Sun Devils surrendered 299 first-half yards, mirrors that disparity. The 1999 breakthrough demonstrated how dominant quarterback play can reshape program trajectories, suggesting Arizona State may overhaul coaching staff to restore competitiveness.
