Incident Overview
On Friday, October 2, a head-on collision occurred on the 7000 block of Highway 91 in Johnson County, Tennessee. The crash involved a school bus carrying 28 occupants—students from Abingdon High School returning from a football game—and a 2013 Subaru Impreza. Both vehicles came to rest in a ditch after the Subaru crossed the center line and struck the front of the bus. A secondary crash involving another vehicle was reported, resulting in only minor injuries.
Authorities’ Account
Johnson County Sheriff Shawn Brown told local media that the crash happened at approximately 9:35 p.m. The Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP) issued a preliminary report confirming that the Subaru driver crossed the center line, leading to the collision. A Washington County Public Schools (WCPS) spokesperson identified the bus occupants as student-athletes and described the incident as a head-on collision. The THP also confirmed that the Subaru driver, identified as 35-year-old Douglas McMillan of Tennessee, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Injured Parties
Three juvenile passengers—identified by WCPS as student-athletes—sustained minor injuries and were transported to a hospital along with the bus driver, who also received treatment for minor injuries. No serious injuries were reported among the remaining bus occupants. The driver of the Subaru was the sole fatality. Minor injuries were also reported in the secondary crash, though details on those individuals were not disclosed.
Response and Investigation
Local law-enforcement agencies, including the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office and the THP, are conducting a full investigation into the cause of the Subaru driver’s lane departure. The crash prompted an immediate response from emergency services, and the highway was temporarily closed while investigators documented the scene. No further information on potential charges or policy changes has been released at this time.
