History

Historical Context

The Houston Comets, one of the WNBA’s eight founding clubs, captured the league’s first title in 1997 with a 65-51 win over the New York Liberty, establishing an early standard of dominance. Decades later, the 2025-added Golden State Valkyries echo that legacy, showing how expansion from the original eight teams continues to shape playoff competition.
