History

Historical Context

In 1994, Wales failed to qualify for the FIFA World Cup after finishing fifth in UEFA Group 5 with eight points. The campaign saw England’s manager Terry Venables allocate £2 million for scouting, while Wales relied on part-time staff and limited resources. Today’s Nations League loss to Denmark mirrors that historic imbalance, as Wales again confronts elite squads while smaller nations like Norway and Portugal dominate group standings. The recurring disparity urges UEFA to reconsider funding formulas, potentially reshaping future qualification pathways for nations with constrained budgets.
