History

Historical Context

In 1989, the Associated Press expanded its college football poll from a Top 20 to a Top 25, reshaping national rankings. The inaugural 25-team list featured Texas, Oklahoma, Alabama, Missouri, and Florida, each vying for limited slots amid a 120-team Division I-A field. Today's AP Top 25 shifts—Missouri entering at No. 14, Alabama climbing to No. 6, Texas holding No. 1—mirror the competitive churn first seen after the 1989 expansion. That historic broadening continues to amplify media pressure, drive recruiting battles, and generate weekly ranking volatility across programs like Florida and Oklahoma.
