History

Historical Context

In 1994 the NFL instituted its first hard salary cap, set at $34.6 million per team to limit spending. That rule forced owners like Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones to release veterans such as safety Darren Woodson, saving millions in cap space. The same financial pressure reappeared in 2026 when the Denver Broncos cut linebacker Dre Greenlaw, eliminating $2.166 million of dead money.
