History

Historical Context

When the WNBA launched in 1997, the Houston Comets captured the league’s first championship, establishing a high-profile women’s professional basketball model. The Comets, led by Cynthia Cooper, posted a 27-5 regular-season record and averaged 78.3 points per game, outscoring opponents by 5.2 points. Similarly, the 2024 Atlanta Dream’s semifinal surge mirrors that early dominance, as they forced 21 turnovers and converted 9.1 steals per game into 18.1 points. The precedent set by the Comets’ early success continues to shape league strategies, prompting franchises like the Dream to prioritize defense and larger venues such as State Farm Arena.
