History

Historical Context

The 2010 Supreme Court ruling in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission, issued in June 2010, affirmed that corporate political speech cannot be limited. The ruling let the Freedom of the Press Foundation and The Intercept argue that $100,000 Truth API fees commodify protected speech. Now President Donald Trump blames Fox News for ignoring his rallies as the SEC, urged by Senator Elizabeth Warren, investigates the $100,000 Truth API fees. The Citizens United precedent implies courts may deem the API charges protected speech, yet could also trigger legislative reforms reshaping how leaders monetize digital platforms.
