History

Historical Context

The June 1984 Operation Blue Star stormed the Golden Temple, prompting Indira Gandhi’s assassination on 31 October 1984 and nationwide anti-Sikh riots that killed about 3,350 people, displaced tens of thousands, and spurred the Khalistan movement. Decades later, the October 2026 murder of activist Madhusudan Sandhu in Amritsar revived those communal tensions, drawing criticism from Congress MP Gurjeet Aujla against the AAP government.
