History

Historical Context

The 2008 global financial crisis, sparked by a U.S. housing bubble, drove household debt to 127 % of disposable income by the end of 2007 and sparked a surge in personal-loan defaults. Economists note that such over-leveraging can trigger personal crises, a pattern reflected in the 2026 suicide of Airbnb guest Sambhav Jain at Mumbai’s Supernova tower over a disputed alimony claim.
