History

Historical Context

In the 1990–1991 Gulf War, a U.S.-led coalition, supported by Saudi Arabia, expelled Iraqi forces from Kuwait, altering Middle Eastern security. The operation mobilized roughly 540,000 troops, including 100,000 Saudi soldiers, and cost about $1.5 trillion, per Department of Defense estimates in total. Today's Yemeni government offensive mirrors that coalition model, with Saudi air power, Pakistani troops numbering 30,000–40,000, and the Houthi insurgency challenging supply routes. If history repeats, prolonged foreign involvement may deepen humanitarian crises, as the World Food Programme already reports three-quarters of Yemeni families facing hunger.
