State leaders said video was clipped and crowd enthusiasm, not anger, prompted an intervention to keep schedule.

History

Historical Context

In 1991, Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao appointed Manmohan Singh finance minister and began liberalisation that lifted foreign-investment caps and devalued the rupee. FDI rose from $132 million to $5.3 billion by 1995-96, fueling expectations of rapid growth. Now Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman opened a Rs 1 lakh-crore horticulture hub in Madanapalle, and Congress leader Jairam Ramesh disputed a protest video, reviving the clashes of the 1990s reforms.
