History

Historical Context

The 1995 O.J. Simpson murder trial, where former NFL star O.J. Simpson faced murder charges in Los Angeles, ended with a not-guilty verdict. Prosecutor Marcia Clark offered 1,000 forensic exhibits, defense lawyer Johnnie Cochran cited police misconduct, and Judge Lance Ito oversaw a trial watched by 30 million viewers. Sam Wood’s 3 October arrest on assault and strangulation charges in Queensland echoes that scrutiny, as Queensland Police detained him and a magistrate refused bail. The celebrity-trial precedent predicts intense media focus and possible civil damages, prompting Mark Watkin’s indefinite leave and hinting at judgments akin to Simpson’s $33.5 million award.
