Opening Phase and Initial Services
Kai Tak Hospital in Kowloon Bay has started its first phase of operations, offering general outpatient care through the Family Medicine Integrated Centre. The centre’s appointments were fully booked on the opening day, a government statement said. Specialist outpatient services are scheduled to commence later this month, while radiology and pathology examinations will be introduced gradually throughout October.
Facility Scale and Capacity
The 500,000-square-metre complex comprises five towers, 37 operating theatres and, when fully staffed, 2,400 inpatient beds. In its initial rollout, the hospital also opened the Oncology Block alongside the Family Medicine Integrated Centre. These facilities replace the 2,018-bed Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Yau Ma Tei as the city’s largest public hospital, with services being transferred progressively to Kai Tak.
Background and Development Timeline
The hospital was first proposed in the 2016 Policy Address as part of a broader healthcare development blueprint. Its construction follows a decade-long planning process, and the opening marks the culmination of that initiative. The former Queen Elizabeth Hospital site is slated for redevelopment to host other health-care services once the transition is complete.
Future Phases and Expected Impact
The second phase, planned for 2028, will introduce accident and emergency services that are projected to be roughly three times larger than those at Queen Elizabeth Hospital. Additional clinical specialties, including paediatrics and gynaecology, will also become operational at that time. Health officials anticipate that the expanded capacity and modern facilities will alleviate pressure on existing hospitals and improve access to specialised care across Hong Kong.
