Historical Context

The Euro 2004 final, held in Lisbon in 2004, saw Greece defeat Portugal 1-0, igniting a nationwide call for football reform. The Estádio da Luz hosted 55,000 fans, prompting the Portuguese Football Federation to dismiss coach Luiz Felipe Scolari and revamp the senior roster. In 2024, Portugal under Jorge Jesus benched Cristiano Ronaldo before his exit, while Germany’s Jürgen Klopp fielded a XI, including goalkeeper Jonas Urbig, versus Serbia. These recurring overhauls echo the 2004 upheaval, indicating both federations may lean on talents like Florian Wirtz and Derry Scherhant to sustain competitive momentum.
