Tragic Fatalities and Injuries
A small vessel carrying roughly 120 migrants set out from Terminus beach in Berck and was intercepted by French emergency services late in the evening. The French lifeboat service pronounced two men—aged 45 and 34—dead after they suffered cardiac arrest. Two young women, aged 20 and 26 and identified as Somali nationals, were rescued with chemical burns on one’s legs from petrol contact with seawater and breathing difficulties from inhaling fumes. French firefighters were alerted shortly before midnight, and the Société Nationale de Sauvetage en Mer (SNSM) rescued four people from the boat, including the two deceased men and the two injured women, who were taken to Rang-du-Fliers Hospital. French emergency services also retrieved about 20 additional migrants from the water; those individuals reportedly refused further assistance and returned toward the dunes.
Rescue Operations and Vessel Details
The boat’s departure from Berck was followed by a rapid response from French rescue teams. In total, the SNSM rescued four migrants, while other emergency crews saved roughly 20 more, bringing the total number of people rescued to around 24. The incident occurred just days after a separate capsizing off northern France that claimed three lives, including a child.
Anti-Migrant Demonstrations and the Patriot Platform
Following the deaths, anti-migrant protesters gathered in Hampshire, where a separate dinghy carrying about 150 migrants had arrived on Britain’s south coast earlier that day. Demonstrators, organized by Danny Tommo’s Patriot Platform (real name Daniel Thomas), have staged actions in Dover, Portsmouth and Gosport since the previous month. The protests are described as aiming to highlight what organizers view as Labour’s failure to stop the migrant crossings.
Legal Action Against Protest Leader
Danny Tommo has been charged with entering a restricted zone at a migrant processing centre in Dover and was remanded in custody pending a trial scheduled for next year on accusations of criminal damage to a Channel boat.
Ongoing Migrant Crossing Context
The incident adds to a recent surge in small-boat crossings of the English Channel, underscoring the continued humanitarian and security challenges faced by French and British authorities as migrant numbers rise.
