Lapid calls sham

On September 30 2026, an Omani co-pilot stabbed captain of a Tel Aviv flight; passengers subdued him and plane landed in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu hailed the captain as hero and invited him to light the Independence Day flame in May 2027.
Israeli officials ordered a security review, citing gaps and blaming the transport ministry.
Leader Yair Lapid called the review a sham and said Netanyahu evaded responsibility.

History

Historical Context

The 1976 Entebbe hijacking, in which 102 hostages were seized on an Air France flight and rescued by Israeli commandos, reshaped Israel’s security politics. Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin authorized Operation Entebbe, deploying 100 soldiers over 2,500 km at a cost of roughly $1 million, demonstrating decisive state response. Similarly, the September 30 2026 FlyDubai hijacking of an Israel-bound flight, thwarted by passengers and cited by Benjamin Netanyahu to bolster his coalition, mirrors how security crises translate into electoral gains. The Entebbe precedent taught Israeli leaders that decisive counter-terror actions can sway public opinion, prompting today’s government to leverage the 2026 incident for political advantage.
