History

Historical Context

In July 2006 Hezbollah’s raid that seized two Israeli soldiers triggered a 34-day war; Israel rejected a U.S.–backed cease-fire proposal on 14 August, delaying prisoner swaps and leading to UN Security Council Resolution 1701. The episode showed that Israeli refusals to negotiate releases can extend fighting, a pattern repeated in October 2026 when Netanyahu’s government turned down early hostage-exchange offers, prompting criticism from families such as Yaakov Godo’s.
