Summary

Zhang Arrested for Spying

U.S. authorities arrested Wanying “Heather” Zhang, 34, at LAX for acting as an unregistered foreign agent for China.
The FBI says Zhang spied on Lai Ting-yu, son of Taiwan President Lai Ching-te, in Seattle.
She allegedly sent photos, video and license-plate numbers of the target’s family to Chinese officials.
Zhang will appear before a Los Angeles federal court on Monday.
Taiwan condemned the act as transnational repression.

Summary

Taiwan Boosts Defense

Taiwan pledged to raise defense spending to 5% of GDP, up from 3%.
The government approved a special budget for the T-Dome air-defence system.
President Lai inspected a missile-launch exercise in Pingtung County on Sep. 18, 2026.
The spending increase follows heightened Chinese pressure after the espionage case.
U.S. officials warned the hike could alter regional security dynamics.

History

Historical Context

In the 1995-96 Taiwan Strait Crisis, the PLA mobilized up to 150,000 troops, fired DF-21 missiles and closed the strait, prompting Lee Teng-hui to secure a $1.5 billion emergency fund and a U.S. carrier deployment. The pattern repeats today: Wanying Zhang’s espionage arrest and Taiwan’s 2026 pledge to raise defense spending to 5 % of GDP show Beijing’s coercion still drives Taipei toward deeper U.S. security ties.
