History

Historical Context

In 1990 Nolan Ryan, pitching for the Texas Rangers, recorded his 5,714th strikeout, overtaking Walter Johnson to claim baseball’s all-time strikeout record. The milestone capped a 27-season career that already included a record seven no-hitters and made Ryan the first pitcher to amass over 5,000 strikeouts. His longevity and high-velocity style helped cement the league’s shift toward power-arm right-handers.
