History

Historical Context

In March 2015, Saudi Arabia led a coalition to launch Operation Decisive Storm against Houthi rebels, aiming to restore Yemen’s internationally recognised government. The coalition deployed roughly 100 fighter jets, conducted over 1,000 airstrikes, and the United Nations reported more than 2,000 civilian casualties within weeks. Today's offensive in Dhubab district mirrors that 2015 push, with Yemeni forces again seizing Bab al-Mandeb positions while the Saudi-led air cover repeats historic patterns. The recurrence suggests prolonged regional instability, prompting the United Nations to call for renewed diplomatic negotiations to prevent further maritime disruption and humanitarian loss.
