Expanded Refund Rollout
Amazon has begun issuing automatic payments to additional Prime customers as part of the federal settlement announced by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). The new order raises the maximum individual payout from $51 to $200 and extends eligibility to members who used between 11 and 20 Prime benefits in a 12-month period. Payments are delivered electronically via PayPal or Venmo, or by mailed check, without requiring consumers to submit claims or complete forms. The FTC indicated that the expanded distribution will continue through the scheduled deadline in 2027.
Settlement Background
The FTC filed a lawsuit in 2023 alleging that Amazon enrolled consumers in Prime without explicit consent and made cancellation difficult, creating what the agency described as “sophisticated subscription traps.” The parties reached a $2.5 billion agreement in September 2023, comprising a $1 billion civil penalty and $1.5 billion earmarked for consumer restitution. Initially, only customers who used ten or fewer Prime benefits were eligible for refunds.
Eligibility and Payment Details
To qualify, consumers must be based in the United States, have been enrolled through a disputed checkout flow or have unsuccessfully attempted to cancel between June 23 2019 and June 23 2025, and have used no more than 20 Prime benefits (e.g., Prime Video, Prime Music) in any 12-month period after enrollment. Under the revised terms, those who previously received the lower $51 cap may receive supplemental payments of up to $149 to reach the $200 ceiling. Recipients must cash or redeem the funds within 60 days of issuance. As of September, the FTC reported that Amazon had already refunded more than $845 million.
Consumer Guidance
Federal regulators warned consumers to be alert for scams, emphasizing that neither the FTC nor Amazon will request payment, personal details, or fees to release refunds. The FTC directed affected customers to its designated Amazon refund page for verification and further information.
