History

Historical Context

On November 10 1975 the freighter SS Edmund Fitzgerald sank in Lake Superior, killing all 29 crew members and exposing the U.S. Coast Guard’s limited search-and-rescue assets; the incident spurred proposals for more funding and stricter vessel safety rules. Today, the Coast Guard’s suspension of searches for a capsized fishing boat near Singing Beach and a missing Gulfstream G100 echoes those historic resource constraints.
