Incident Details
On Sunday afternoon, a tractor pulling a hayride with roughly 20 occupants overturned near the intersection of Berwick Turnpike and Comfort Hill Road in the village of Wellsburg, New York. Sheriff Bill Schrom of Chemung County reported that the tractor was traveling at a high speed, swerved to the right, and began to roll. The wagon it was pulling became detached, ejecting passengers—most of whom were children—onto the roadway.
Response and Medical Care
A volunteer fire department arrived quickly, and a medical helicopter was dispatched to the scene. Sheriff Schrom indicated that one passenger was airlifted to a hospital, while at least five others were transported by ambulance. Approximately eight additional riders were taken to medical facilities by friends or family members.
Casualties and Injuries
Authorities confirmed that at least six individuals sustained serious injuries.
Community Reaction
Wellsburg resident Jeremy Brent, 39, observed the medical helicopter landing and noted that many of the injured were children whose belongings were scattered across a driveway. He expressed concern about the condition of the victims in an email to local media.
Ongoing Investigation
Sheriff Schrom’s office is conducting an investigation into the cause of the crash, focusing on the tractor’s speed and the driver’s actions at the intersection. No further details have been released pending the outcome of the inquiry.
