History

Historical Context

In March 1999 NATO launched Operation Allied Force, its first major combat use of precision-guided bombs, JDAM kits and satellite targeting, firing 202 Tomahawk cruise missiles and conducting over 38,000 combat missions. US F-15 and F-16 fighters dominated Yugoslav MiG-29s, while UAVs performed hundreds of sorties. The campaign proved low-cost drones could shape air strategy, a lesson now guiding NATO’s Eastern-flank deterrence planning.
