History

Historical Context

The 1979 Iranian Revolution, culminating in the November 4 hostage seizure, sparked a 444-day crisis that reshaped Middle-East geopolitics. Ayatollah Khomeini’s new regime executed 2,000 former officials, while the United States paid $3.5 billion in reparations to families. Today, Benjamin Netanyahu blames Britain for tolerating Iran-backed terror, echoing 1979’s warning that Iranian influence threatens Western assets like the Strait of Hormuz. The precedent of prolonged hostage crises compels Israel and the UK to tighten intelligence cooperation, aiming to prevent attacks such as the alleged 2026 RAF base plot.
