Gaza’s Devastation One Year After the Ceasefire

By Drooid · · How we work

Scale of Destruction

Satellite images released in June 2026 show that roughly 80 percent of Gaza’s built environment has been damaged, with about two-thirds of the roughly 200,000 structures destroyed, according to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA). Large neighbourhoods such as Jabaliya, Shuja’iya, Beit Lahiya and Beit Hanoun are now classified as uninhabitable, while the towns of Rafah, Tel al-Sultan and Khan Younis display fresh damage to homes, businesses and places of worship.

Humanitarian Crisis

More than two million displaced people remain in tents and temporary shelters. Heating points and reinforced tents currently accommodate only about 10 percent of the population, according to UN Secretary-General’s spokesman Stéphane Dujarric, who warned that funding shortfalls and Israeli restrictions jeopardise preparations for the rainy season. Israel reports that 600–800 trucks enter Gaza each day, but humanitarian organisations say only 20 percent carry essential aid. UN deputy special coordinator Ramiz Alakbarov has accused Hamas of disrupting aid distribution, citing incidents in which armed men entered a World Food Programme warehouse and assaulted two truck drivers.

Ongoing Casualties and Unrecovered Bodies

On October 1, 2026, a mass funeral in al-Yarmouk neighbourhood marked the recovery of 105 bodies from the rubble of the al-Taj residential block destroyed on October 25, 2023. United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) estimates that 8,000–10,000 bodies remain buried under the debris. Gaza’s health ministry puts the war death toll at 74,000, including 21,000 children, and records 175,000 injured. The ministry does not separate civilian from combatant deaths; the Israel Defense Forces dispute the figures, stating there is “no basis to assume” all listed deaths resulted from IDF activity.

Official Statements

UN Secretary-General António Guterres told the General Assembly that, despite some relief since the October 2025 ceasefire, “conditions remain intolerable” and international humanitarian law is being “brazenly violated.” The UN spokesperson warned that without additional shelters, heaters and fuel imports, thousands will face severe hardship as temperatures drop.

Key Statistics

  • Population: 2.1 million (?1 million under 18) – Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics
  • Buildings damaged: ~80 % (?200,000); destroyed: ~66 %
  • Rubble: 61 million tonnes (?20 × global war rubble 2008-2026) – UNDP
  • Deaths: 74,000 (including 21,000 children) – Gaza health ministry
  • Injured: 175,000 – Gaza health ministry
  • Bodies still buried: 8,000–10,000 – UNDP
  • Daily trucks entering Gaza: 600–800 (?20 % with aid) – Israeli reports / humanitarian NGOs

These figures illustrate the persistent scale of loss and the acute humanitarian needs that remain a year after the ceasefire.
