Wizards of the Coast Unveils “God Packs” and Major Booster Redesign for 2027

By Drooid · · How we work

Core Announcement: God Packs and Booster Overhaul

Wizards of the Coast announced that, beginning with Nauctis: The Sunken Realm—the first Magic: The Gathering set of 2027—every Magic Multiverse set will include a random chance for a booster to become a God Pack. In a God Pack, every non-basic card is a rare or mythic-rare. The chance of a God Pack is approximately 1 in 1,000 for standard Play Boosters (now called Booster Packs) and 1 in 300 for Collector Boosters. The changes also raise foil-rare and foil-mythic drop rates, add Japan Showcase cards to regular boosters, and remove foil commons and uncommons from Play Boosters. Collector Boosters will lose two commons and one uncommon from their foil slots, reducing the total card count from 15 to 12. No MSRP adjustments are planned.

Background & Context

Traditional Magic boosters have mixed commons, uncommons, rares, and mythics. In 2014, Wizards experimented with “god packs” in the Journey Into Nix expansion, inserting a pack filled with rare Theros god cards. The new God Packs expand that concept to all future sets.

Data & Statistics

  • God Pack odds: 1 / 1,000 for Booster Packs; 1 / 300 for Collector Boosters.
  • Booster Pack (God Pack): 10 non-foil rares or mythics, 1 special “God Pack celebration” card, 2 non-foil “Booster Fun” variants, and 2 foil “Booster Fun” cards.
  • Collector Booster (God Pack): 1 foil land, 3 foil rares/mythics, 3 non-foil “Booster Fun” variants, 5 foil “Booster Fun” variants.
  • Removed cards: foil commons and uncommons from Booster Packs; two commons and one uncommon from Collector Booster foil slots.
  • Future rollout: Changes apply to all Multiverse sets from 2027 onward; Universes Beyond sets adopt the new format in 2028.

Official Statements & Responses

The company also highlighted the higher foil-rare and foil-mythic rates as compensation for the loss of guaranteed foil cards and confirmed that booster prices will stay the same.

Timeline

  • 2027 (launch): Nauctis: The Sunken Realm releases with new booster structure and God Pack odds.
  • 2027 onward: All Magic Multiverse sets adopt the new booster format.
  • 2028: Universes Beyond sets begin using the updated boosters.

Impact and Player Experience

Removing foil commons and uncommons streamlines the opening experience, focusing attention on rarer cards. Higher foil-rare and foil-mythic rates, plus the chance of a God Pack, should increase perceived pack value. Japan Showcase cards in regular boosters expand access to premium artwork. The reduction in foil commons/uncommons may raise the cost of obtaining foil versions of lower-rarity cards, potentially influencing secondary-market prices and Limited-format strategies.

What’s Next

Wizards has opened a discussion channel on its official Discord to field player feedback. Future set announcements will confirm whether additional adjustments are planned based on community response.
