History

Historical Context

In the 2008 presidential election, Barack Obama carried Michigan with 54.6% of the vote, securing the state's 20 electoral votes. Obama’s 2008 campaign invested roughly $150 million in Michigan advertising, and the Democratic Party registered a record 1.2 million new voters. Similarly, in 2024 Obama is campaigning alongside Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed and gubernatorial nominee Jocelyn Benson as Michigan launches mandatory early-in-person voting. The parallel underscores how high-profile endorsements and intensive ad spending continue shaping tight Michigan races, prompting parties to prioritize early-voter outreach nationwide.
