History

Historical Context

In 1995 MLB expanded the postseason, creating three divisions in each league and adding a wild-card berth that let the first non-division winner enter the playoffs. The Atlanta Braves and Cleveland Indians reached the World Series, while the New York Yankees began a streak of thirteen postseason appearances. The format still drives mid-season trades aimed at immediate wild-card impact.
