History

Historical Context

In 2012, the NFL and the NFL Players Association agreed to a $765 million settlement over concussion lawsuits, reshaping league safety policies. The agreement, brokered by Commissioner Roger Goodell and attorney Johnnie Cochran, required the Cincinnati Bengals to adopt safety protocols, covering over 4,500 former players. Today’s Bengals-Jaguars clash echoes that legacy, as Ja'Marr Chase’s concussion and disputed penalties reignited debates over officiating consistency and player-safety enforcement. The NFL may tighten replay reviews and expand concussion rules, shaping future games and protecting players like rookie Tee Higgins.
