History

Historical Context

The 2010 NFL roughing-the-passer crackdown, enacted after the 2009 season, forced stricter enforcement and sparked league-wide debate. The league recorded 71 rough-the-passer penalties that year, a 29% rise from 55 in 2009, according to NFL statistics. Today, Jacksonville Jaguars’ defensive end Travis Hunter’s all-defensive snaps, Arik Armstead’s nullified interception, and the Cincinnati Bengals’ penalty surge reflect the heightened scrutiny on defensive aggression. The legacy of the 2010 rule shift suggests teams will balance versatility with discipline, influencing roster decisions and penalty management in upcoming seasons.
