History

Historical Context

In 2007, the New England Patriots completed a 16-0 regular-season, the first NFL team since the 1972 Miami Dolphins to finish unbeaten. The Patriots threw 50 touchdown passes, averaged 31.5 points per game, and survived a 38-35 overtime victory over the New York Giants. Similarly, the 2024 Chiefs, Vikings, 49ers and Patriots each opened 4-0, while high-scoring shootouts like the Chiefs-Raiders 30-27 game echo the 2007 offensive surge. These patterns suggest the league’s scoring inflation may produce more unbeaten starts, prompting teams to prioritize aggressive passing attacks and defensive adjustments.
