Historical Context

In 2015 the European migrant crisis saw a record 1.3 million asylum applications, with most arrivals crossing the Aegean and many reaching the UK via small boats. The UK Home Office launched Operation Refugee Rescue, a shift echoed by Hungary’s border barrier and the Brexit campaign that framed the crisis as EU-immigration failure.
