Surge in Israeli Military and Settler Violence Across the Occupied West Bank

Escalating Incidents and Casualties
Recent weeks have seen a sharp rise in confrontations between Israeli forces, settlers, and Palestinians throughout the occupied West Bank. Israeli troops opened fire on a vehicle carrying three Palestinians near Bani Naim, east of Hebron, killing 38-year-old Hossam Alaa al-Din Abdul Jabbar Walad Ali and seriously wounding two others, according to Palestinian officials. In a separate episode near Ramallah, Israeli soldiers reported confronting “terrorists” after a vehicle was set on fire; one Palestinian was described as “neutralised by an Israeli civilian.” The Palestinian Red Crescent confirmed treatment of multiple injured individuals, including three victims of settler attacks in the Imriha area southwest of Jenin.
Targeting of Olive Harvest and Agricultural Land
Israeli raids on olive farms in the northern West Bank have injured farmers and restricted access to fields. In Beita, south of Nablus, a 46-year-old farmer was beaten during a raid, while stun grenades and tear-gas were deployed in the Jabal al-Arma area, forcing farmers to abandon their work. Farmers reported that the season’s olive-oil output could fall by roughly 20 % because of repeated blockades and attacks. The Palestinian Colonisation and Wall Resistance Commission documented that more than 45,000 trees, including over 26,000 olive trees, were cut down or damaged in the first half of 2026, and that Nablus province recorded 900 settler attacks—the highest among West Bank provinces.
Scale of Attacks and Detentions
The same commission recorded 2,051 attacks in September, of which 1,404 were carried out by the Israeli army and 647 by settlers. These incidents resulted in three Palestinian deaths and 88 injuries, including children and women. Agricultural damage affected 14,600 trees that month, with 9,334 olive trees harmed. Israeli forces also conducted raids that led to the arrest of six Palestinians in the Hebron area and three in Haris, while detaining additional individuals in Zababdeh, Jayyus, and other locations.
Official Statements and Responses
The Israeli military described the Hebron vehicle incident as a car-ramming attempt against soldiers, asserting that the Palestinians were driving “suspiciously.” In Ramallah, the army said it acted after reports of a vehicle fire and the presence of individuals carrying knives. Palestinian authorities, including the General Authority of Civil Affairs and the Palestinian Red Crescent, have condemned the use of lethal force and the withholding of bodies, labeling the actions as part of a broader pattern of violence aimed at limiting Palestinian political participation ahead of upcoming elections.
Broader Impact
The cumulative effect of lethal incidents, agricultural sabotage, and mass arrests has heightened insecurity for Palestinian civilians and threatens the economic viability of the olive harvest, a critical source of income for many West Bank families. The reported figures underscore a sustained escalation in both military and settler-driven attacks throughout the territory.
