History

Historical Context

After the United States Air Force replaced the 1960s MIDAS system with the first Defense Support Program satellite on 6 November 1970, a fleet of 23 geosynchronous infrared satellites provided continuous missile-launch warning for over four decades. The Space Development Agency’s postponed Tranche 1 launch mirrors that early reliance on single-satellite tests, where aborts historically pushed capability into later fiscal years.
