History

Historical Context

The current clash at Kolkata’s Satyajit Ray Film Institute echoes the city’s long-standing Naxalite-linked campus unrest that grew after the 1967 Naxalbari uprising led by Charu Majumdar. Majumdar’s Historic Eight Documents inspired student and peasant militancy, which by 1980 had spread to about 30,000 members in 30 groups. Today, Bangiya Hindu Jagaran Manch protesters confront police, reviving that historic tension.
