Karnataka’s New Integrated Industrial Townships

The state government announced the creation of nine integrated industrial townships within the Bengaluru Metropolitan Region (BMR). The plan identifies 13,500 acres for the townships, of which about 7,900 acres have already been acquired and acquisition of a further 5,600 acres is in progress, according to Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar. The townships are intended to host technology, high-tech manufacturing, healthcare, education, and sustainable-infrastructure clusters.

Context and Economic Targets

The initiative is part of a broader 10-15-year development blueprint for the BMR, prepared with the ISEG Foundation. Karnataka aims to raise its economy to $1 trillion by 2047, with an intermediate target of $400-420 billion by 2037. The plan also calls for expanding the metro network by 312 km and enhancing suburban rail connectivity by 2037, alongside a 210-km ring road linking ten new hubs and integrating the Peripheral Ring Road with the NICE Road.

Key Land and Infrastructure Figures

  • Land acquisition: 7,900 acres secured; 5,600 acres pending.
  • Water demand: Projected requirement of 3,600 million litres per day by 2037.
  • Housing: Proposal for 600,000-650,000 new homes, including 40,000-50,000 units for industrial workers.
  • Transport projects: 270-km Regional Rapid Transit System connecting Bengaluru with Tumakuru, Mysuru and KGF; consideration of extending the Mumbai-Bengaluru high-speed rail corridor to Mysuru.

Government Statements and Future Actions

Chief Minister Shivakumar directed officials to identify land for an “AI City” modeled on Singapore’s Punggol and for an AI university. He also emphasized the need for comprehensive water-reuse strategies and lake rejuvenation. The Greater Bengaluru Authority will assume jurisdiction over all areas of Bengaluru Urban District, consolidating planning under a single agency.
