History

Historical Context

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle died on 7 July 1930; his prolific output of over 200 stories, including the Sherlock Holmes tales first published in The Strand Magazine in 1891, had already made Holmes the most portrayed literary character. His 1902 knighthood by King Edward VII and enduring popularity meant his death sparked a renewed surge in sales, a pattern echoed by later author deaths.
