History

Historical Context

On 6 October 1973 Egypt and Syria launched a surprise attack that killed 2,656 Israelis, prompting Prime Minister Golda Meir to declare national mourning and secure a massive U.S. arms lift. The war’s shock reshaped Israel’s security doctrine, ensured lasting American support, and led to the 1978 Camp David Accords—frameworks echoed today in Netanyahu’s vows against Hamas and ongoing Gaza negotiations.
